Forty-five days passed before 5-year-old Ezra Toczek was able to leave the Manhattan hospital after receiving a life-saving liver transplant. His remarkable story gained attention earlier this year when his former preschool teacher, Carissa Fisher, selflessly volunteered to be his living donor. As luck would have it, she turned out to be a perfect match and was able to offer Ezra the much-needed liver transplant he had been waiting for.

According to Karen Toczek, the mother of the patient, being discharged from the hospital was a significant milestone. She expressed gratitude for finally reaching this point, as the recovery process turned out to be much longer than anticipated. Toczek mentioned that her son had his entire old liver removed and now relies solely on the new liver he received from Carissa.

According to Fisher, the kind-hearted benefactor, she expressed, “They mentioned that everything went smoothly, which is great.” She further mentioned that despite going through her own recovery process, she is proud to have been able to assist her young friend.

She expressed her satisfaction, saying, “I feel a sense of accomplishment. It brings me great joy to be able to assist him. Naturally, everyone else is extremely thrilled to see him improving and feeling better.”

After his donation, Fisher decided to spend six weeks in the vibrant city of New York before heading back to his hometown of Alden in late August.

Ezra’s mother was at a loss for words when she expressed her gratitude, saying, “I can’t put it into words, really. I will never be able to repay her, you know? I just love that she’s close enough to stay in our lives and watch him grow.”

According to People, Fisher’s family has been keeping a close eye on her recovery, with Ezra checking in frequently. He made a couple of visits while she was still in the hospital and continued to visit her during her follow-up care in the city.

The Toczeks have planned to remain in New York City for a few weeks while he recuperates. Once they return home, the family has a celebration planned.

“It was an enjoyable experience,” Fisher exclaimed. “It was absolutely wild, and now I’m eagerly anticipating Ezra’s return so that we can reunite once more.”
