The Biden-Harris administration has announced funding for a proposed Amtrak line from New Jersey to Scranton and Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania. The proposed route would run from proposed York Penn Station to Scranton, with three daily round trips with stops in Newark, Montclair, Morristown, and Dover. The line will mostly use existing tracks. This initiative is part of a bigger effort to strengthen America’s passenger railroads, which will get nearly $1 billion in new funding. We have yet to decide on the project’s timeframe and anticipated cost. The proposed line seeks to restore passenger train service to the Southern Tier, which has not had direct connection to New York City since the 1970s.
