Predicting 2017 for WWE

Posted on Jan 2 2017 - 8:00am by Eddie McDonald

It’s a new year, yes it is! The calendar has turned another year and now we will take the next 365 days to orbit the sun. Over the course of the next year, the WWE will have loads of live content as well as what is on the WWE Network. This post will cover some predictions that you could see from WWE during 2017.

Finn Balor will recapture the WWE Universal Title and align with the Club

Finn Balor had one of the more memorable runs in the history of NXT since it has been its own show. He was called up from NXT when he was drafted in the WWE Draft last July to the Raw brand. He made the most of his opportunity, however, it was short-lived. During his match with Seth Rollins at SummerSlam for the vacant Universal Championship, Balor was injured. He fought through and continued the match, where he was victorious in the end. One night later on Monday Night Raw, he had to relinquish the newly won title due to a shoulder injury. He will be back this year and realistically it will be around WrestleMania. Regardless of when he comes back, he has numerous feuds to work with. No matter which feud he is in first, he will recapture the Universal championship by summer’s end. He will finally align with his former Bullet Club brethren, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson to form the Balor Club and he will become a heel.

John Cena will tie, but not break, Ric Flair’s record and turn heel

Ric Flair is regarded as the best professional wrestler to ever step inside the squared circle. He holds the record for being a 16-time world champion. John Cena, who has been the man atop the WWE mountain for the past decade-plus, has 15 world title reigns.  He challenges AJ Styles for the WWE World Title at the Royal Rumble at the end of the month and I see him walking out with the title. This could potentially set up the much-anticipated Cena vs Undertaker match at WrestleMania 33. For years, fans have been chomping at the bit for Cena to turn hell and become the bad guy. Well in 2017, Cena will do just that and that will send he WWE Universe into a frenzy.

Braun Strowman will win a championship

The gigantic monster that is Braun Strowman has made tremendous strides since making his debut back in 2015 as a member of the Wyatt Family. He is extremely agile and quick inside the ring. He doesn’t talk much, but when he does, he shows improvement on the mic. In 2017, Strowman will win a single championship. I could see him challenging Roman Reigns for the United States Championship and eventually taking the title from the former Shield member.

Bayley will dethrone Charlotte at WrestleMania

Ever since July, the Raw Women’s Championship picture has featured Charlotte and Sasha Banks in a feud that saw the title change hands on numerous occasions. For the time being, Banks is out of the title picture and Bayley is next in line. Bayley gets her first crack at the title at the Royal Rumble, but will likely fall in defeat. The WWE writing team can use the Daniel Bryan (more on him later) WrestleMania 30 run as a template for the run Bayley can embark on. Make her constantly come close, only for something to cost her in the end. Commence the run with a title win at WrestleMania, just like Bryan. This could set up a feud with Bayley and a heel Sasha Banks as well as other feuds.

Daniel Bryan will wrestle the Miz at some point

In 2016, the WWE Universe was saddened and shocked when they learned Daniel Bryan had to retire due to medical reasons. Bryan loved wrestling and stated that numerous times. After test after test, Bryan said he was cleared from outside doctors, but the WWE wouldn’t clear him to compete. When the brand split happened, Bryan was named the General Manager of the SmackDown brand. In his role as GM, Bryan has had his run-ins with the Miz, who took 2016 by storm. The “feud” escalated on an episode of Talking Smack when Bryan said Miz wrestled like a coward. Miz erupted and cut a scathing promo on Bryan and the two engage in back-and-forth verbal jabs and Miz even taunts Bryan by using his moves in matches. There is no doubt in my mind that Bryan will be cleared for a one-off match with Miz and that could happen at WrestleMania.

Baron Corbin will be WWE World Champion

Since being drafted by the Blue Brand in July, Corbin has maximized his minutes, most notably in a triple threat match on the final SmackDown of the year against AJ Styles and Dolph Ziggler for the title. Corbin is a true heel and does not care about whether or not fans boo or cheer him. By the end of 2017, Corbin will win the title.

Kurt Angle will make his WWE return

This prediction almost seems inevitable, but it will happen. Oh, it’s true, it’s damn true! Angle left WWE in 2006 and joined TNA, where he had a tremendous run. It’s time for Angle to come home. The rumors of his return seem to happen every year, but 2017 seems to be the most realistic for his return. Now, even if he comes back, that doesn’t mean he will have a long run. However, there are a handful of “dream matches” he could have. Personally, I would like to see him square off with Rusev, Seth Rollins, Styles, Bray Wyatt, Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura. The perfect night for his return would be the Monday Night Raw the night after WrestleMania 33. The crowd would go ballistic.
