The Pittsburgh Panthers era under new head coach Kevin Stallings has begun. The Panthers faced Eastern Michigan University in the 2016-2017 season opener on Friday, Nov. 11.

The game was close, as Pitt won by a final score of 93-90.

The Panthers were led in scoring by Jamel Artis and Michael Young, who totaled 53 points together. Artis also totaled nine rebounds, while Young posted 10 rebounds. Young commented after the game about being double-teamed and how he handled the ball.

“It is something I would expect once I got it going,” Young said. “I expect the team [Eastern Michigan] to try to double team and to try to reach. I had seven turnovers so I have to handle the ball better, be stronger with the ball, and be more decisive with my decisions.”

Stallings praised his team’s effort for winning a close game in his post game press conference.

“I’m very happy for my team and actually despite what anybody else might think I am very proud of them,” said Stallings. “I was concerned that the style coming right out of the gate could be problematic. In the first game of the season you see 40 minutes of zone. At times I thought we attacked their zone very well and at times we didn’t.”

The Panthers will face Gardner-Webb at the Peterson Event’s Center on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
