A new No. 1 contender for the NXT Championship was crowned Wednesday night, and the fatal four-way match did not disappoint.
Johnny Gargano beat Aleister Black, Lars Sullivan and Killian Dain to earn a title match against Andrade Almas at NXT Takeover: Philadelphia.
The match was intense right from the opening bell, with Sullivan showing off his impressive strength early on. The fight made its way up the ramp, where Dain ended up smashing Sullivan through the announce table.
As the action returned to the ring, Black started to take control. He took out both big men with his signature strikes, then turned his attention to Gargano. Just when it looked as if he was going to get the victory, the Dutch Destroyer was blindsided by the Undisputed Era.
Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly pulled Black to ringside, but he was able to dispatch them both. This was when Adam Cole hit him with a neckbreaker on his knee, exacting revenge for Black beating him in their qualifying match.
Gargano came to Black’s aid, then threw both Dain and Sullivan into the steel steps. With the goliaths out of the picture, Johnny Wrestling hit Black with a slingshot DDT for the victory.
Not only did this earn him the title match, he also ended Black’s impressive undefeated streak.
The NXT Women’s Championship was also on the line, with Ember Moon defending her belt against Sonya Deville. The challenger proved to be a worthy opponent, using her striking prowess to ground the high-flying Moon for most of the match.
The War Goddess was able to mount a comeback, throwing everything she had at Deville. After hitting a chain of her signature moves, Moon was able to hit her devastating Eclipse finisher to retain the title.
Kairi Sane then appeared on the stage, making it clear that she wanted to be Moon’s next challenger. But out of nowhere, Shayna Baszler made her presence known and attacked the Pirate Princess from behind. The Queen of Spades then locked her in a chokehold, knocking Sane out.
Her and Moon then engaged in a stare down, leaving the NXT Women’s title picture undecided for now.
In tag team action, the Street Profits took on Riley Apex and Kris Starr. Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford made short work of their opponents, celebrating their victory in the crowd. They then sent a clear message: they’re coming for Fish and O’Reilly’s tag titles in the near future.
