If you are ever watching the WWE and the Miz is in the ring, you are likely to hear him boast that he is the “most must-see WWE superstar of all time.” Clearly, this is a giant exaggeration, but it’s part of what makes his character work. On Tuesday night, Miz made himself must-see.
On Talking Smack, a show on the WWE Network that airs immediately following Smackdown Live, Miz got into it with Smackdown Live general manager Daniel Bryan and things got heated.
The Miz was upset that two new championships (Women’s Title and Tag Team Titles) were introduced and made a big deal of, but the Intercontinental Title, which Miz currently holds, was not even brought up.
This led to Bryan telling Miz he didn’t respect the guy holding the championship and when asked why, he said he thinks Miz “wrestles like a coward.” This set Miz off and he went in on Bryan. Miz told Bryan that he works the style he does is because it allows him to do it day-in and day-out for the past 10 years. He also said he has not been injured in his career, where Bryan’s career was cut short due to injuries.
The verbal assault continued as Miz brought up the injury situation of Bryan.
“Let me tell you about a coward. Let me tell you about a guy who tells his WWE fans, people that he loves that he will be back – he PROMISES THEM – “I promise you, I will be back in one year’s time to claim this [Intercontinental] title.” But you didn’t, Daniel, did you? But I’m the coward. I’m the one who doesn’t love the fans,” Miz said.
Bryan responded by telling Miz that if he was cleared he would be back in the ring.
Miz followed that with “Oh you would? You love that WWE ring, you love wrestling. You love being right in that wrestling ring and you love wrestling, right? Well why don’t you quit? Why don’t you quit and go to the bingo halls with your indie friends, Daniel?” Bryan go up and walked away and then Miz finished with the following:
“No! Don’t you walk away from me, Daniel. Don’t you walk away! I’m the one that loves the fans. I’m the one who loves everyone and everything. You’re the one that gets up and walks… every single time! You’re the coward!”
This “shoot” promo from the Miz has the whole wrestling world buzzing. The biggest questioned asked is whether or not this was a work or a shoot. A work is something that is planned and a shoot is “going off script.” There is such a thing as a worked shoot, which has some elements of real life mixed with the storyline aspects. This promo from Miz was a worked shoot. The two likely knew the bullet points of the conversation, but Miz was allowed a little more freedom to express some real-life frustrations.
This blurred the lines of what was real and what was scripted. The fact that so many people were asking whether that was a work or a shoot is the point of why this segment aired. It got the fans talking about something that happened on a post-game show. This will make viewers more incline to tune into Talking Smack or subscribe to the WWE Network if they haven’t already.
One of the most vastly underrated performers in the WWE is the Miz. He is a great heel with a great gimmick and really knows how to get a crowd to boo him out of the building. He gets such an unreal amount of heat, which equates to a lot of cheers for his opponent to beat him up.
It has been quite the ride for the Miz in terms of being a WWE superstar. He started off as a reality television star on MTV’s the Real World. On the show he said he would one day become a WWE superstar. Nobody took it seriously, but then Miz appeared in season four of Tough Enough, a reality based show giving a contract to the winner. Miz finished in second place of the show.
Since debuting 10 years ago, Miz has built quite the impressive resume. He is a former World Champion and got the title after winning the Money in the Bank ladder match in 2010 and later in the year successfully cashing in on Randy Orton. He held the title for six months and even successfully defended it against John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 28, albeit with help from the Rock.
He is a former two-time United States Champion, four-time WWE Tag Team Champion, two-time World Tag Team Champion and is the 15th WWE superstar ever too be a grand slam champion. He was named the #1 ranked wrestler in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated 500 best wrestlers in 2011. He was also the most hated that year.
The character of the Miz is a perfect heat magnet. He thinks he is an A-List, Hollywood movie star, like what the Rock is, when in reality he is in films that go straight to DVD. That is no knock on his acting skills, but the fact that he exaggerates the movie star he actually is fits his character perfectly. Add in the fact that he is always accompanied by his real-life wife Maryse and it’s the perfect A-List, Hollywood couple.
Many people have said they gained a lot of respect for the Miz after this scathing promo on Bryan. Some didn’t think he had it in him, but he showed that he can spit fire with the best of them. His mic work is already gold and this added another element to that. What many don’t realize is the Miz does a whole lot of PR work for the WWE. He is underrated in that aspect on top of being underrated inside the squared circle.
Bryan said Miz wrestles like a coward, when in reality, he wrestles like a heel. It’s ironic because Bryan was given the advice to change his style in the ring to preserve his career and that unfortunately did not happen and now he can no longer compete. The Miz used that in the best way possible during this promo.
This memorable promo is something that can propel the Miz to new heights as he continues to hold onto the Intercontinental title, something he has done for the over 140 days. This can’t lead to a match between the two, but it could be a case where Bryan just throws opponent after opponent to the Miz with the hopes of getting the title off him.
If you weren’t aware before, the Miz is in fact, awesome.
