There are some wrestlers that can cause quite a stir in such a short amount of time, and Shayna Baszler is one of them.
On this week’s episode of NXT, the Queen of Spades finally made her in-ring debut. She took out Dakota Kai quickly and with authority, much like her opponents that paved her path of destruction to the Mae Young Classic finals. But ever since she burst onto the scene last summer, I have noticed a similar pattern with some fans.
There is a lot of negativity directed towards the former MMA fighter. I’m not talking about her wrestling persona; she’s a heel that’s supposed to be hated and she does it very well. What I’m talking about are certain comments that I see almost every time she’s talked about.
I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinions. However, in this column I’m going to discuss some of these comments and why I personally disagree. Let’s get started, shall we?
“She’s boring and can’t wrestle”
This one is perhaps the most common insult thrown at wrestlers.
Certain fans want to see a specific style of wrestling, so wrestlers who don’t use it are seen as boring and incapable. Not all fans think this way, but there’s a select few that do.
Baszler utilizes a mix of catch wrestling, Muay Tai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which means she focuses more on grappling, submissions and strikes. She’s not going to wow you with high-flying maneuvers; rather, she’ll beat you down and make you tap out all with a smile on her face.
I enjoy seeing top rope dives and high-risk moves as much as the next guy, but I also don’t mind seeing a more mat-based style as well. Some people need to be more open to other styles of wrestling besides their favorite.
Plain and simple, people who say this need to grow up. Not everyone will find her attractive, but to go out of your way to say things like this online? Find something else to do.
“She’s only in WWE because she’s friends with Ronda Rousey”
Ask yourself this then: if Baszler was only in WWE because of Rousey, then why did she get signed first? Last time I checked, Ronda isn’t even with the company.
I highly doubt that if WWE didn’t have faith in Baszler, then she wouldn’t have made it to the MYC finals. She’s definitely proven herself worthy, winning five championships across five different promotions in her career. She’s also wrestled for some of the more well-known promotions all over the world, such as Shimmer Women Athletes, Absolute Intense Wrestling and World Wonder Ring Stardom.
So to say she’s only where she’s at because of her friend is a bit of a stretch. It seems as if some people are completely against former MMA fighters trying to venture into the world of professional wrestling. They can do whatever they want, and believe it or not, they might actually be good at it.
I’m not saying that everyone who isn’t a fan of Baszler is wrong, they can have their own opinions. I’m just saying that some need legitimate reasons as to why they don’t like her, because all the reasons I’ve seen so far are just like the ones mentioned above.
She isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so you might want to get used to her.
All hail the Queen of Spades.
