The Pittsburgh Penguins saw remarkable success by incorporating the old “Pittsburgh Gold” alternate jerseys into their uniform rotation this past season; so much so that the eventual Stanley Cup Champions would wear them at home throughout the playoffs.
The club recently announced that Pittsburgh Gold — the same yellow hue worn by the Pirates and Steelers — would permanently replace the “Vegas Gold” treatment they had worn since 2002 beginning next season for both home and away games. No word yet on the return of the fan favorite gold jerseys or the “Snoop Dogg edition” with the diagonal lettering.
No doubt inspired by the Penguins’ public and financial acclaim, the University of Pittsburgh football program announced Tuesday that they too would introduce a Pittsburgh Gold color scheme for their homecoming game on October 8th against Georgia Tech. The throwback uniforms feature a lighter, richer blue jersey inspired by the Tony Dorsett-Dan Marino era and a Pittsburgh Gold helmet emblazoned with the beloved script logo.
And let’s face it, the script “Pitt” couldn’t look any better than on that French’s-mustard-colored background.
Naturally, throwback merchandise is available on the University’s website. Click here to watch Pitt’s official unveiling video.
