The Duquesne Dukes came into Saturday’s contest riding high off of a win over the Dayton Flyers, and they were hoping to continue their win streak at Rooney field.
With the breakdown of their defense in the second half, Kennesaw State saw the opportunity and put up 20 points to end the game, with a score of 36-28.
After a halftime score of 17-16 in favor of the Dukes, head coach Jerry Schmidt expected his team to finish out the game, similar to how they blanked out the Flyers last game. Allowing a 67-yard pass and run from Justin Sumpter, the Owls showed Duquesne that they wouldn’t let off the gas. Scoring two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter would seal the game, as Daniel David led his team to their first win over Duquesne in school history.
Freshman running back A.J. Hines did not find the end-zone in this one, after a week where he lit up the scoreboard with two rushing scores. Hines rushed for 95 yards on 25 attempts, while fellow teammate, Dillon Buechel threw for 295 yards and two scores.
Although the Owls snapped Duquesne’s eight-game win streak at Rooney field, Buechel’s performance is one that you can’t be upset with.
Duquesne now shifts their focus to Jacksonville as they’re hoping to bounce back after a loss on homecoming weekend. The game is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPN3 live from Jacksonville.
