Reports confirmed Elko’s decision to return to Texas A&M as the head coach, following the dismissal of Jimbo Fisher earlier this month. Elko’s tenure at Duke, which commenced in December 2021, showcased a commendable 16-9 record over the past two seasons. The 46-year-old earned accolades as ACC Coach of the Year in the previous season, turning a struggling 3-9 Duke team into a remarkable 9-4 record.
Despite a recent 7-5 regular season completion with a victory over Pittsburgh, Elko’s departure from Duke emerged amidst Texas A&M’s tumultuous search for a new head coach. Initially linked to Kentucky’s Mark Stoops, who refuted the speculations via social media, the Aggies swiftly pivoted their focus to Elko. Although Duke made efforts to bolster Elko’s contract last summer, the financial prowess of Texas A&M eclipsed Duke’s resources.
Fisher’s staggering $76 million buyout upon dismissal underscores Texas A&M’s substantial investment in its program, a factor Duke couldn’t match. Elko’s concerns, much like at any institution, revolve around securing booster support for NIL deals crucial in recruiting and retaining players. With Duke having committed 22 players for the upcoming season, the coaching transition might prompt reassessment among these recruits.
Elko’s arrival at Duke followed the departure of David Cutcliffe, who guided the Blue Devils through a successful stint with six bowl appearances in seven seasons. The team struggled significantly in the pandemic-affected 2020 and 2021 seasons, marking 13 consecutive ACC losses and only five wins overall. Elko’s impact, despite being a first-time head coach, revitalized Duke’s performance, leveraging inherited talent.
